Different vibes – Rony Seikaly drops his “Reform” ep on Stride Records
Fresh from a hat-trick of outstanding gigs at Space Miami, Hatch Dubai and The Gärten Beirut, Rony Seikaly acts fast releasing his third EP on his burgeoning Stride Records imprint. Seikaly’s sound is very broad, taking on many styles, and this EP “Reform” is aptly named to complement the different vibes of this release. The second track “Flux” is a collaboration with New York-based producer Antranig.
“Reform” begins as a trip to Funky Town, with that insouciant cocky stride but a darker, more chopped-up vibe, spiced with cool, soulful vocal motifs. A complex, rippling synth tune enters and becomes insistent, building to a brace of breakdowns where horn arpeggios keep things building. The synth riff is almost singable, the tune unavoidably danceable.
“Flux” sees Rony join forces again with Antranig. It has a jazzier feel and a beguiling narrative, as sibilant hi-hats back a strong beat into a noodling piano riff and echoing vocal patterns which build in power to a steep, sudden, sustained breakdown before the full works drops again to keep feet moving.
“Reform” drops on 5th April on Stride Records.
