A journey through wild sonic landscapes – Jacob Groening releases his debut EP on Kamai Music

Jacob Groening’s debut EP for Kamai Music takes the listener on a trip out into the wide open, a journey through wild sonic landscapes. The title track – „Sulg“ sets the mood. A blurred picture rendered through a minimalistic instrumentation of echoing saxophones, guitars and piano. It oscillates around repetitive themes that range from oriental sounds to reduced blues chords like in „Giom“.

The B-Side shifts away from this and shines its light on South American influences as in „Sosa“ and the remix „Sulg“ by the Argentinian producers Kermesse. Groening’s approach to his productions, ranging from down to midtempo, is characterised by its use of live recorded instruments, well tempered minimalistic percussions and rich melodies that take the listener on a voyage into the mind’s very own comfort zone.

trndmsk: What inspired you to make the remix?

Kermesse: We’ve been following Jacob’s work since a while already, so it was very nice being invited to be part of his new release. From the beginning we loved the mood of the original track, so it was very inspiring and fun working with so many recorded instruments.

How did you approach the original track?

We’ve decided to create a “minimalistic“ version of the track, shorten the sounds a little bit, at the end we got a nice afterhours relaxed mood.

Where and how did you produce it?

By that time we were touring in Chile and the main idea of the remix came out one morning at Nomade’s studio in Santiago. The remix was finished in Buenos Aires.

How did you get in contact with the record label?

We got to know the label through their parties in Klunkerkranich last summer in Berlin.

Who asked you for the remix?

We’ve been contacted by Amaya Bonfante.

What’s up next after the release? Are you working on other projects?

After this release our own ep at Kamai will come up, 3 original tracks with an incredible Elfenberg’s remix, in a couple of months. Looking forward! We’ve been working on other releases and remixes that are also coming out during this year, and currently we are touring for three months in Europe, from our headquarter in Kreuzberg, Berlin.
