“Fela’s voice and message are what really inspired me” – Ceej releases a new edit
The latest edition of our free download series finds Ceej for his first appearance. The US producer edited Fela Kuti’s “Water No Get Enemy” and releases his version on trndmsk.
trndmsk: What inspired you to make the edit?
Ceej: I heard the original version of this track and the vocal really caught my attention. Fela Kuti’s voice for both singing and spoken word is so musically impactful yet smooth.
How did you approach the original track?
Fela’s voice and message are what really inspired me so I wanted to keep them as the focal point in my edit of the track. I kept this in mind when adding in my own sounds, rhythms and melodies to make sure they lined up thematically.
Where did you record it? And how?
The edit was done in my home studio. I played with the vocal arrangement first, trying to achieve a layout that stayed true to the story of the original, but also had a little twist. Once I had a vocal arrangement I liked, I began building the other elements of the track around that.
Why do you want to provide it as a free download?
I have played this track out and received a solid response. I wanted to share it with people on a larger scale and especially with other DJ’s who like the sound.
What’s up next after the release? Are you working on any other projects?
I have releases coming out in the next few months on labels and as free downloads. Dates are always in flux so I can’t give too many details as they will most likely change! Most of my current projects are more or less in the same genre of this release with some slight variation of course. They all are drawing from world sounds and merging them with slightly more electronic styles.
