“We fused those influences together unconsciously” – gázel’s Downtempo track “Giants Walk”
The latest edition of our free download series finds gázel for their first appearance. The duo releases an original called „Giants Walk“ on trndmsk.
trndmsk: What inspired you to produce the track?
gázel: We both come from very different musical backgrounds and have almost opposing views on sound design and arrangement tactics. This manifests itself in ways that constantly surprise us. Julian has a past in Punk, Indie and Hip Hop projects and is fond of nearly any handmade music. Lucas has been listening to experimental electronic music since his teenage years and has a past in harder music styles such as Metalcore and Hard Techno. After we listened to the finished track, we realized we fused those influences together unconsciously, while still sticking to our lowest common denominator: Downtempo. We think the track does very good job at representing who we are, musically.
Where did you record it? And how?
For the past two years we’ve been jamming together, collecting material in all kinds of places. We had the possibility to access a rich collection of different instruments, analog synthesizers and really, really (really!) weird vinyl records. This includes the old harmonica of Julians grandfather as well as Lucas’ 15 year old guitar, which sadly wont witness this release. Nearly 90% of the tracks instrumentation comes from those jam sessions.
This spring, we locked our selves in a lonesome house in the countryside, without any influence of this modern day shit. There we melted all those parts together into something that became “Giants Walk” and a few other tracks.
Why do you want to provide it as a free download?
Lucas can remember a time around 2010, when he and his friends met regularly to listen to the newest tracks on the relatively new Trndmusik blog, which back than mostly consisted of very cheesy house edits of indie songs. Guilty pleasures, you know? So releasing this track with you guys made a lot of sense to us. Also we think that a lot of the most interesting music is available for free and is created without any monetary objectives in mind.
What’s up next after the release?
There will be an EP on the Basel-based LOKD Imprint, run by Dandara & Avem later this year, which includes remixes from some really talented artists. We are super excited for the release. We also have plenty of additional material ready, are planning upcoming releases and are currently working on new tracks.
Are you working on any other projects?
For the last half year we’ve been working on our live set, which includes lots of live instruments and is complicated as fuck. Now we are almost ready and very excited to play live. Aside from the gázel project we both DJ individually as Ephraim (Julian) and Harmon (Lucas) and we are part of the Cologne based Kollektiv 33, which organizes open air raves, builds Festival Floors and supports the local art scene.
