Niki Sadeki’s compilation on Souq Records: „Working on this project has been the highlight of 2020 for me so far“
„Mirror for the Sun“ is a 14-track cycle of tempos, moods, and hums exploring different facets of a softly solar energy. The compilation departs from the Souq’s signature sound, infusing it with a rotation of new elements. Niki Sadeki’s curation brings more of an uncanny Berlin-style voltage to the label’s earthy tradition, shaped by her own learned perception of deep house. The result is a cosmic and crunchy experimental blend, with mingling moments of downbeat drama and upbeat glow. We talked with Niki about the release.
trndmsk: Niki, thanks for taking the time to speak to us. How are you?
Niki Sadeki: Thanks for having me on! It has definitely been a rollercoaster of emotions with lots of ups and downs. Some days I’m super motivated, inspired and I’m on top of everything. And then there are days that I have to drag myself out of bed and keep pushing myself to move forward. So it’s definitely an interesting experience.
Congratulations on the release of you first VA compilation! It’s getting a lot of attention and acclaims, and rightfully so! There are so many great gems by great artists. please tell us more about the process.
Thank you! Yes, I’m definitely proud of this compilation. Working on this project has been the highlight of 2020 for me so far. It is a departure from Souq Records’s signature sound and overall style. I was honoured when they asked me to be in charge of this very interesting project. I’m very fortunate to have amazing artists and producers in my circle. So I got in touch with a couple and discussed the vision – the level of enthusiasm I received was extremely encouraging. I loved the process and enjoyed every minute of it. From reaching out to artists and our numerous insightful discussions, to working with the amazing visual artist, Sahar Lineal Art, for the cover art. Each and every step was great and I’m very thankful for the opportunity.
With the global pandemic fully in effect, what do you miss the most currently?
The normalcy of everyday life, travelling around the globe, playing music.
Tell us more about your future plans.
Well, given the craziness that we are living in at the moment and with all the uncertainties about the future I cannot really predict the next time I’d get to actually perform at a club or a festival. These days, I’m focusing a lot on production, learning Ableton and putting ideas together. So who knows, maybe real soon I’ll get to release a remix or an original track? Stay tuned I guess.
Any advice for upcoming DJs?
Practice, enjoy the journey of learning, take risks and try to get yourself out of your comfort zone.
Thank you for doing this interview with us Niki, any last words?
Thanks again for having me. I just want to extend my gratitude to all those who always support me and send me heartwarming messages. I read them all and they are all like fuel for my soul. Love you all and cannot wait to dance again with all of you in the near future.
