trndmsk Podcast #75 – Shepherd

Shepherd created the latest podcast for trndmsk.

trndmsk: Matej, what can we look forward to in the next few minutes?

Shepherd: Well, in a way I’m curious myself. Always when I release a recording and let go of it, I listen to it in a new way than in the process of making it. The podcast is deep, groovy, made for home listening but also has some strong hints to the dancefloor. I surprised myself by including so many tracks with singing or vocal samples. There are loads of interesting beats & flairs and I’m amazed by the producers who created the tracks.

When did you record the set?

I think the first solid structure of the set I recorded was on Saturday, 14th of November. And then every few days when I would feel inspired I would check in and do some little changes. The final recording was done on the „deadline day“, of course.

What surrounded you at the time?

Peace. I was on the countryside, where I usually work but I took a day off for myself. That day was a beautiful sunny autumn weather and I took a long walk through the forest and the fields. In the evening I treated myself with some sauna and after that the tracks were just flowing.

How did you choose the tracks?

My main criteria was that I really, really love each track. It might sound obvious but it’s not always like that, especially when playing live. On the dancefloor, I tend to experiment and try out spontaneous things much more and let the crowd’s feedback guide me. Sometimes some tracks have a shiny element to it which immediately catches my attention, but after a few listens or plays my interest fades away. With this podcast I really took time to digest every track and try to find some timelessness in them … and yet, time will tell!

Did you make a plan before?

I always have a general feeling where I want to go and what I want to create. And on the other side it’s also about the tracks I have in my collection or I’ve just discovered and want to showcase them. During the creative process, the plans also adapt and change. I love the thrill of it.

Do you have a favorite track included in the mix?

I feel the podcast has a really wide variety of tracks and each of them represents a feeling or state which is very dear to me. So in a way I can fully relate to every track. But if I had to choose one track, it would be „Nandu feat. Vâlva – Daydreams“ – it features a beautiful vocal and the lyrics start with „In sleep we daydream“. Aren’t we all doing that a bit, now that the 3D reality is so demanding of us?

What three songs do you tend to use in your current sets?

Since the covid pandemic started, I haven’t had regular gigs, so it’s hard to tell. Also, when I have regular gigs I tend to change and tailor almost my entire selection from gig to gig and always include the latest tracks that I’ve discovered. One track that I would play a lot and is also featured in my podcast is „Colyn – Merging Realities“.

How did you survive the corona pandemic so far?

Actually very good and I feel lucky and privileged for that as not everyone has had the same options. Soon after the pandemic I started to work in the countryside and I currently spend a lot of time there. The need to maintain a balance between the city and nature has been growing in me for a while. And after 9 years of living in Berlin and loads of travels, I’m very happy about that upgrade.

Of course I had a lot of ups and downs. Moments of sadness, grief and questioning the essence of everything & my purpose in it. But I don’t see this as something „bad“. It’s all part of the journey. It’s okay not to be okay. And maybe there’s also a silver lining to all this – I have a feeling that the topic of mental health is being discussed much more openly now, both in the general population but especially among artists who are expected to be at their best all the time.

With the global pandemic fully in effect, what do you miss the most currently?

To have more opportunities to express my passion. I guess it’s probably like that for most people, no matter what they do for a living. Especially to the artists, the system is telling us to adjust and to do something „useful“, and start earning money in a different way. If there’s something required more than ever, it’s our flexibility to adapt and survive, true. And at the same time I feel it’s important to not give up on our passions just because the going has gotten harder. And we, as individuals and society, need creativity, culture, art and love more than ever now!

The other thing I really do miss is the dancefloor. For me this can be (sadly not always) one of the most unique, inclusive and liberating places in our current system of society.

Tell us more about your future plans.

Personally I will continue to dig deeper into woodworking, building, taking care of plants and animals. Basically everything that is connected to nourishing a land and living organisms around us.

Regarding my music, there are some „background changes“ happening at the moment and I’m curious what new constellations will emerge. Whenever it’s possible again to gather and dance, I want to play and organise events. With my Hütte crew we are starting to plan for a festival in 2021.

Are you working on any other projects?

I’m always happy to help and support my dear friends Clarissa and Sarah with new music releases on the Circles & Stones label. Their curation and feeling for doing things is just top notch!

And I’m also quite active with my Lucid tribe. We tend to do a lot of events in the context of embodied dance, music, ritual and prayer – simple but powerful stuff!
