m@kossa about his album “20/20”: “I thought it was time to make a more structured music project”
Italian producer m@kossa announces the release of his album “20/20” on Hupupa. We talked with him about longplayer and his current situation.
trndmsk: How long did it take you to produce the album?
m@kossa: It took me the whole year, I started work from the beginning of 2020 when I was touring in USA/MEX and I just finished the mixing and masters a few days ago in December.
How did you choose the title of the LP? Is there a special meaning behind it?
Actually in the beginning was another one I usually try to represent what I feel inside, my sensations with the title but this year was too overwhelming, it was too much, I called 20/20. Inevitable! :)
What inspired you to produce the tracks and the LP?
I thought it was time to make a more structured music project and I started thinking from the first moment about the construction of an album, I felt a strong desire this time to finally print a Vinyl.
Where and how did you produce the tracks?
All tracks produced and written in my studio/home in the countryside of Siena, in a small village called Monteroni d’Arbia. Excluded Alba that we made in February with Marco Mezzavilla in his beautiful New York flat having a couple of sessions surrounded by an amazing Brooklyn view full of flying birds.
I used the Beringher Crave as a main synth in many tracks and I really had fun with my homemade wood stand, bass sounds often came from Nord Rack x2. Various recording studios like vocals and percussion noises I used my Shure55. If have to say one favorite plug in, Omnisphere was a great friend and Ableton of course made the rest.
How was the feedback so far?
I didn’t share so much the album as I usually like to do, this time with Vinyl I wanted to have more suspense and I did also with my close friends and collaborators. A week ago I release the first single Infinitum with a powerful video from my brother Mirko and it got great attention from the audience. Now is the time of the second one, and I’m really glad to be premiere with you.
How and why did you choose the record label?
A year ago I started to run HUPUPA records, a new Italian label, with Luca, Jacopo and Armando, and for this album was clear since the beginning the idea to realize something for our community , without any reference and borders. You know, sometimes you have more pressure when you work for someone else. This feeling was important and it gave me so much freedom during the composition. The guys also, really support me a lot with many feedbacks and Jacopo our graphic designer made a really incredible job.
How did you survive the corona pandemic so far?
Everything canceled this year, no travel anymore. I focused on this project and it saved me in a way, lots of time in the studio without any kind of ideas to go outside:). Of course it is not easy to quit all the other activities with live show and events but we need to be patient and listen to the world, my mission right now is really to be focused in my projects without planning so much and be ready and pretty lucid for when we will be reborn again.
What’s up next after the release? Any plans and projects?
We have a great release on Hupupa with a lovely song with a Brazilian religious chant from Z/ F an emergent Italian duo with a remix of the great Lukas Endhardt that I really can’t wait to share. Also I’m starting with my brand new michrohphone to record nature ambient sounds of the field the surround me here in the Tuscan valley, and I think that would be the next quest. Stay tuned!
